When comparing web hosts, you may have noticed that many discount web hosting providers offer a lot of server space and bandwidth for a small price. What they don’t tell you is that they are actually overselling their web hosting accounts.
Overselling involves selling more web hosting server space and bandwidth than is physically available. By doing so, the web host provider is hoping that you and their other web hosting clients only use a fraction of the alloted web server space and bandwidth. Overselling web hosting server space obviously maximizes the profit margin for the web hosting provider.
But how does overselling web hosting affect the end user (you)?
If you or another web hosting client end up actually using the allotted server space or bandwidth, the first thing to suffer is the ability or speed to access your web pages. Next, increased downtime is likely because the web hosting provider will be required to upgrade servers and/or add additional Internet connections to the web server.
The truth is, most small business and personal web sites do not need 5 GB of server space and 100 GB of bandwidth. You end up paying for much more than you will likely ever need.
For example, if your average web page, including all images was 50 kilobytes in size, 1000 MB (or approximately 1 GB) of bandwidth would allow for approximately 20,000 page views. For the average small business or personal web site, this is more than adequate. If your web site becomes popular or has special needs (downloads, graphics, etc.), you simply upgrade as your web site volume increases.
At Outland Hosting, we are proud to say that we do not oversell our web hosting accounts. We feel that you, as our web hosting client, should receive 100% of the server space and bandwidth we advertise. We cannot match the deep discount pricing of web hosting providers that do oversell their web hosting accounts, but we will exceed in reliability and quality of service.
